We choose to benchmark our model's performance against the actual returns of two large stock and bond mutual funds which are in turn benchmarked against industry standard un-managed broad-based indices (the Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index and the Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index). The two mutual funds have been selected because they represent viable investment alternatives as opposed to non-tradable indices.

The performance of the Model Portfolio is depicted by the black line. This is net of a 1.75% annual management fee that is prorated and assessed quarterly.

Stocks are depicted by the green line and bonds are depicted by the blue line.

Notice that during periods of high volatility in the stock market (for example during the summer of 2002) the model experiences similar features yet the fluctuations are severely muted.
